I grew up in El Paso and had never ever had a gordita. I always knew gorditas to be made from corn and deep fried. My colleague insisted I have one and I was hooked!! Now I often stop in and grab some before work or after for dinner. The refried beans are awesome. I am vegetarian so I always get the rajas Gordita. The only problem i have encountered is that they tell us that all the Gorditas come with beans but we never can see the beans in the Gorditas! I have figured out that if i ask them to add beans after i order them, we are ok. Otherwise they never have beans. Its a fast food place and the workers are always kind (but so are most elpasoans) and i enjoy coming here.
Their burritos and gorditas are great. My favorite is the green chile beef but my bf loves their pasando burrito. Today I tried their green chile and cheese and well let's just say I wouldn't order it again. Their tortillas and gorditas are definitely homemade. The service is quick and they have a drive thru, they also take credit cards which is great.
I've been coming here for years, since they open their first location. My all time favorite is the Quesadilla combinada w/ Asado de puerco. There is some wait, but it moves quickly.
I thought I knew most of the eateries on Lee Trevino Street, having eaten at most of them over the past three decades since becoming a teacher within the World-class Ysleta ISD August 1989. There is a LOT of turnover, but a few excellent restaurants survive because they have developed regular clientele who return again and again. So it was an incredibly pleasant surprise, introduced by a good friend. La Gorda may seem smallish on the inside--it the tables fill up fast and the drive-up window has steady business. There is good reason this exceptionally fine restaurant is a survivor: fantastic/friendly personnel, simply superior Mexican food, as good as any found South of the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande!, all at an extremely low price. It certainly as my enthusiastic "Wheel of Approval!"
